Some credit Abul-Fath Gilani, A Persian physician during the Mughal Empire’s rule of India, As the hookah’s inventor. He is said to have expressed concerns about the health risks of tobacco and designed the water pipe as a way to purify the smoke. Whether he genuinely invented the hookah or popularized its use is debatable.
